The added value of a stay in the cattery

We all understand the immediate benefits from boarding a cat whilst on holiday, such as, not imposing on friends and neighbours, ensuring that the cat is safe and well fed at all times, with immediate access to veterinary care etc.  But there are also considerable additional benefits from boarding your cat that may not be immediately apparent.

In the cattery our staff see many, many cats and therefore can generally tell what constitutes a healthy cat, especially in relation to the other cats in residence at the same time.  This acts as an additional health check to the annual veterinary check up and can pick up the odd problem that is not visible when seen in isolation.

In addition, at the cattery, the cat is in a controlled environment where both the input (food) and the outputs (poo and pee) are seen in conjunction and many anomalies can be spotted quickly.  Many owners never see their cats defecate because they do it away from the house and garden and so miss this opportunity to spot health problems at the outset.  At Severn View Cattery we have been able to alert a number of our customers to potential (and unfortunately sometimes very serious) problems with their cat’s health that have not been apparent at home.  For example urinary and kidney problems are much easier to spot in a cattery.  (Worm infestation can also be identified from a cat’s faeces far more easily than from changes in the cat’s condition or behaviour).

Because we have white bedding areas for the cats, which are cleaned on a daily basis, we can also identify pest infestation quickly and more certainly than you probably can at home - flea droppings show up as dark red spots on the white shelves.  These spots are uniquely recognisable in our environment whereas they are very nearly impossible to see at home unless you set out specifically to do so (see our piece on fleas).

These are just a few of the additional benefits from boarding your cat that you may not have considered before, and make cat boarding such good value.
