Flea Guide
Fleas
are not just a summer problem. Centrally
heated homes mean that fleas can thrive all year round, including the depths of
winter. To keep on top of the
problem cats therefore need to be treated all year round.
Some
owners seem surprised to hear that their cats have fleas.
Some deny it! Cats do not
always scratch when they have fleas and it can be difficult to see the little
creatures themselves. The only way
to see them is by parting the fur and looking at the skin.
Even then it might not be possible on dark coated animals. It is much more likely that you will see evidence of fleas
which is how we pick it up. Flea
poo is very obvious on our light coloured shelves and floor. We see lots of little dark red/black specks.
These are partially digested spots of blood from the host cat.
You can check your own cat by standing it on a piece of damp, white paper
(kitchen roll works well) and then brushing or combing it.
If present the flea poo will drop onto the paper.
There
are various preparations available to tackle fleas.
Remember you will need to treat the house and any other pets too.
You can discuss suitable products with your vet.
It really is not worth spending money on the products available from the
supermarkets. Those from the vet
cost a bit more but are much more effective.
We use Frontline (spray for kittens, Spot On for adults) on the cats and
Staykill in the pens.
We
strongly recommend that you treat your cat for fleas BEFORE you bring them into
the cattery. We maintain a flea free environment here and our aim is
always to avoid sending cats out with unwanted guests they never had when they
arrived. We can do it for you on
arrival if you prefer, just let us know at the time of booking.
We would use Frontline Spot On which lasts a month and this will cost you
£6.50 per cat. If during the
course of your cat’s stay with us we discover that it does have fleas we will
treat it as above and add the cost onto your bill.
Please
remember that flea collars are not effective in the cattery.
For safety reasons we remove all collars
whilst your cats are in our care.
